Please note: Asail is mostly Canon. This means that the possibility of 'mutants' and 'odd colors' are low. The majority of the Weyr's population will be made up of the 5 original colors as created by Anne McCaffrey - Gold, Bronze, Brown, Green, Blue.
That being said, Asail does play host to 'mutants'. We have an Amber Queen, and several Blacks among the ranks, though please take note of the fact that the blacks were ALL transfers. So unless a Satenith or Raniveth fly an Asail queen, or Rerith clutches, there will very likely be no additional blacks added to the ranks of the Weyr.
You're more than welcome to attempt to transfer in another black, but be warned that your chances of being accepted are slim to none - this goes for any mutant transfer - due to the afore mentioned fact that we try to push the basic colors here.
So, without further ado, I give you the Colors of the Weyr! (in order of rank)
Gold:
The golds are the largest and highest ranked, they are also known as 'Queens'. The hides can be a crisp gold color, a green-gold, or even a dull color. They impress only to girls, and they will become either the Senior Or Junior Weyrwoman. They can be flown by Bronzes or Browns, and on occasion the rare mutant color will try his luck. Queens cannot chew firestone, but their riders do have a wing, and they use flamethrowers to sear the thread that escapes the upper wings. A Wing of Queens will typically be found on the lower levels of a fighting pattern. A gold clutch can be anywhere from twelve to sixty eggs, and usually includes at least one queen egg. Golds are highly intelligent, though limited by the same lack of short-term memory and forethought as the other dragons. They do have a slight tendency toward vanity and ego, but no dragon but another Queen will disobey a gold.
Amber:
Currently there is only one Amber in existence, and that is Keera's dragon, Inconnyth. These dragons are also Queens, but they're more in their own little sub-category. Ambers are, as their name suggests, a dark amber in color though the exact shade may vary. They are larger than golds, but when it comes to clutching, these dragons rarely clutch more than fifteen eggs, as opposed to a Gold's forty or fifty eggs- but it is only an Amber that can clutch an Amber. Ambers are equally as bossy as Golds, and they have been known to not take orders from one.
Bronze:
They are the second largest dragons. Their hide can be many different shades, but always have that metallic sheen to it. They impress to only boys, and they chew firestone. Bronzes are one of the dragons that chase the queens, and will become Weyrleader if they fly the Senior Queen, Junior Weyrleader if they fly the Junior Queen. Bronzes are smart--they have to be. They must be clever and wily to avoid Thread as well as to catch golds in flight. A bronze's strength is in tactical leadership and a certain amount of cunning.
Blacks
A black's size covers a fairly large range. They can be as small as browns, or as large as bronzes (if not bigger on occasion), though most tend to fall in between. They are loosely classed as 'Kings', as each black seems to rank individually. V'zar's Satenith, for example, can easily and unarguably be classed a King, while L'kar's Raniveth truly only holds the rank of a brown. Blacks can, and will fly queens if the opportunity is presented. They are extremely cunning and aggressive, and almost always possess violent tempers. They chew firestone and can serve as Wingleaders or Wingseconds during threadfall. Most blacks are male, and impress only to males. There is only one female black in existence as of current, and that is Athenne's Rerith.
Mutations:
On a extremely rare occasion, a mutant will be found in the weyr. Usually a white male or crimson female. On extremely rare occasions, the whites will join the flights of the queens though they stand little more chance than a blue at victory.
Browns:
Browns are a bit smaller than the bronzes. They also impress only to boys and chew firestone. Of the five traditional colors, browns are the "smart ones." Their thought, while limited to the present and immediate future, is logical, sensible, insightful, and wise.
Blues:
The blue males are the "workrunners" of the species. They are stout and hardy, having higher endurance than their smaller green sisters but much the same agility. Blues generally Impress boys, but occasionally girls when boys are in short supply. They may fly the occasional green, but browns usually beat them out. They form the ranks of the fighting Wings. What they lack in size and stamina, blues make up for in personality. Blue make the best Searchdragons-- it takes a good character to know one. Blues are steadfast and loyal.
Greens:
The most numerous of all dragon colors are the green females. They are among the best Threadfighters as well, being extremely dexterous and maneuverable in the air. Unfortunately, they haven't the endurance of their larger siblings and so have to alternate with other greens. Otherwise, they make up the majority of the Wings. They may Impress girls or boys, but girls are preferred and encouraged, as they have a better time coping with the greens' drives. The greens are able to clutch, but are prevented from doing so by chewing firestone. If they were allowed to clutch, Asail would be up to its eyeballs in little green females before one could blink. They are flown by any male who cares to chase them, but generally they mate with browns or blues. They make good Searchdragons, but not as good as blues. Greens are unpredictable and volatile, especially when near to rising. They think with their feelings and passions, displaying a 'point A to point B' thought process. Their emotions, however, run deep. If they like someone, they REALLY like that someone. If they dislike someone, let him beware. Greens make everyone's life more interesting.
